For a long time, the noble state was an anti-hero in Ukrainian history. Too hastily the inheritance from the former Polish Republic was cast away. The Republic became purely Polish, and Ukrainians were seen as plebeians, freed from Polish tyranny by the Cossacks.

Nobility from Kievian Rus’ states wasn't widely known. Who were they in their own eyes? How did they live, quarrel and reconcile, challenge to duels and stand in front of the court, love and marry? Finally, what was important for them in their uneasy daily lives?

This book brings them closer to the modern reader. It also touches upon the search for oneself in the past, which, not unrelated to the ongoing war, allowed Ukrainians to find their Republic, or rather allowed them to recognise it in themselves.

It is the first volume from the new Ister series under the editorship of Łukasz Galusek, Paulina Małochleb and Bartosz Sadulski.

Translated from Ukrainian into Polish by Tomasz Hodana and Katarzyna Kotyńska.
