The second, ‘Norwegian’ stage: 2006–2008
The year 2006 gave birth to a new idea on spatial and functional integration of the front building of the Ravens House with the annexe building. One of the key assumptions was to employ the language of contemporary architecture. Like before, an architectural project on conservation and modernisation of the edifice was commissioned from Romuald Loegler. The former courtyard dividing the front and annexe building was covered with a glass roof. Thus created Patio is a multifunctional space which permits the extension of the Conference Complex and extra exhibition space. Consequently, the ICC Gallery has become one of the largest exhibition spaces in the heart of Krakow. As a counterpoint to the luminous Patio, the glass-steel bridge linking the front and annexe building as well as a glazed bay window of the Reading Room were designed. The former’s shape echoes the outline of an elliptic skylight in the floor of the Patio, hence, allowing the sunlight to enter the Ravens Conference Room. Moreover, the room’s ceiling was exchanged and reinforced, complete refurbishment of ventilation and heating systems conducted, a new skylight created. The annexe building provided a space for new offices complying with modern standards. A new library to accommodate a growing collection of books was created on the third floor, its part being a glazed bay window with the Roland Berger Reading Room. A panoramic hydraulic lift was installed and on the top floor, under a glass roof, the Panoramic Seminar Room was arranged. The room’s platform offers a spectacular view of Krakow’s old town, including Wawel Royal Castle.
The culmination of conservation and modernisation works was renovation of the façade facing the Main Market Square, installation of light illumination as well as renovation of the roof and the entrance hall which displayed the historical walls of the building. Finally, the blinds were installed in the Ravens Room and Panoramic Room.
