GDR. Stories From a Country Which is no More
June 22 – September 2
An unusual chronicle of life in the German Democratic Republic – the no longer existing country created on October 7, 1949, in the Soviet Occupation Zone and functioning until the collapse of the Berlin Wall. (GDR was liquidated on October 3, 1990.).
The 170 black and white photographs show the drab reality of East Germany, captured with a hint of irony. Their authors are accomplished photographers connected with the prestigious Ostkreuz agency – Sibyl le Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Maurice Weiss. They recorded reality in ways far removed from the brief of the socialist propaganda. Even on photographs of official political and social events they were able to unmask the whole absurdity and hypocrisy of the system.
The presented works come from the collection of the Buchsteiner Art Management in Tübingen.
Joanna Piech. Engravings. Grand Prix MTG 2009
September 15 – November 18
The presentation of the copious output of Joanna Piech – winner of the Grand Prix of the International Graphic Art Triennial Krakow 2009 – features several dozen works, including the prize winning prints Czas na spacer ["Time for a Walk"] and Wiem wszystko ["I Know All"].
Joanna Piech practices artistic engraving, mainly linoleum block printing and woodcut. The works, created in various phases of her career, reflect the evolution of her interests, but also the recurrence of certain motifs. The technique ischanging, the artist uses ever larger formats but she stays with the monochromatic colour scheme, she almost invariably builds the fabric of her work with a dense grid of lines and points, which give the impression of pulsating matter. The human figure is the constant theme of her art.
The exhibition is mounted in cooperation with the International Print Triennial Society in Krakow.
Witold Skulicz. Graphic Art Above All Else...
September 13 – November 18
Witold Skulicz (1926–2009), an outstanding engraver, Professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, initiator and co creator of the Internantional Print Biennial in Krakow and president of the International Print Triennial Society in Krakow. Besides the artistic output of Witold Skulicz, the exhibition also presents his activities as an enthusiast, expert on and promoter of engraving.
The show is a review of Skulicz’s art, it reflects the intriguing path leading to the end results – the alternating figurative and abstract motives, which polarise the artist’s inner world – which allows us to follow the restless and dynamic mind of a searching artist. His cycles of prints – reflecting a struggle with the subject matter and with himself – perfectly exemplify the multiplicity of creative impulses, the profundity of inner experience and the temperament of an experimenter.
The exhibition prepared jointly with the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the International Print Triennial Society in Krakow.
